We try to offer GCSEs that match our students’ needs and interests as closely as possible.
English Language, Maths, Biology, History, Geography, Food & Nutrition, ASDAN, Art and Photography.
We expect the majority of students to do at least English and Maths, and to study the equivalent of at least 5 GCSEs.
Students are able to take City and Guilds Rural Skills, BTEC Diploma in Sport, Asdan Awards. Some of these courses involve substantial amount of time off-site.
ELCs are for students who might not be able to get a Grade 1 or better at GCSE.
We offer ELCs in English, Maths and Science.
We also offer Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths.
All our students follow a Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) programme which also includes much of the ASDAN award. Students have a tutor and are able to meet with them regularly to discuss their progress and any problems they may be experiencing. We also offer students of Year 11; ‘Prep for Working Life’ which aims to help prepare the students for when they leave HVS and move on to the next stage of their lives.
We offer sports activities to those who wish to take part as well as cooking and non-GCSE Art, SMSC, RE and PHSE.
Our mission statement stresses the importance we place on preparing our students to be responsible citizens. We do this through our behaviour policy, the care we show our students and how we model British values and SMSC as staff and through our curriculum. Whilst all subjects touch on British values all our students study the ASDAN programme which explicitly teaches about democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance. We also bring in the police to teach some of these aspects, as well as drama groups and other visitors.
