Intent
At Harbour Vale School, we believe that all pupils should have opportunities to engage with music, regardless of their previous experiences, confidence levels or educational backgrounds. Our music provision is designed to support personal development, wellbeing, self-expression and creativity while fostering confidence, resilience and aspiration.
We provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to explore and develop musical skills through enrichment activities and informal learning experiences. Our approach is particularly beneficial for pupils with SEND and those who may have experienced barriers to learning in mainstream settings, as music provides an alternative means of communication, achievement and emotional expression.
The sequencing of our provision focuses on developing engagement and confidence first, before introducing more complex musical skills and experiences helping them discover personal interests, talents and potential future pathways within music and the creative industries.
Implementation
Music is delivered through enrichment opportunities and instrument tuition available during social times and through a weekly enrichment programme. Pupils can access and learn a range of instruments, including ukuleles, keyboards and guitars, in a supportive and informal environment.
Practitioners provide opportunities for pupils to develop fundamental musical skills such as rhythm, timing, listening, coordination and performance. Learning is practical and highly personalised, allowing pupils to progress at a pace appropriate to their individual needs and interests.
Where appropriate, pupils are supported to build their knowledge and confidence over time through repeated practice, performance opportunities and exposure to different musical genres and techniques. Partnerships with external providers, including Dorset Music Service, help to broaden experiences and provide access to specialist expertise and resources.
Impact
The impact of our music provision is demonstrated through increased pupil engagement, confidence, wellbeing and willingness to participate in new experiences. Pupils develop practical musical skills, improve their ability to work collaboratively and gain confidence in performing and expressing themselves creatively.
Assessment is primarily based on participation, skill development, personal progress and engagement with musical activities. Staff monitor pupils’ growing confidence, independence and musical competence through observation and discussion.
As opportunities continue to develop, we aim to expand progression routes into accredited learning, performance opportunities and wider musical experiences, ensuring that pupils leave Harbour Vale with positive experiences of music and an appreciation of its value in supporting wellbeing and lifelong learning.
