Intent
- To demonstrate to our students, the importance and relevance of English language skills in everyday life.
- To enable them to use their English skills to gain qualifications for future college courses and careers.
- To provide a range of reading experiences, to develop cultural and literary knowledge.
- To enable them to gain and build upon the skills of analysis and discussion and become thoughtful, understanding young adults.
Implementation
- Across the year groups the students are exposed to a varied range of literature such as: 19th Century literature; drama and 20th century fiction and non-fiction (please see the learning journey)
- Students complete close reading and analysis of various texts, in order to equip them for both the AQA GCSE English Language exams and the Pearsons Functions Skills English exams – Level 1 and possibly Level 2.
- Students complete oracy tasks within lesson time, which fosters key speaking and listening skills for everyday life.
Impact
- Students will have experienced a broader reading repertoire, covering many topics, issues and cross-curricular subjects.
- Students will have developed a more accurate and confident writing style, whether that is hand-written or typed.
- Students can read and write in a range of text types including email, articles, reports and creative stories.
- Students will have developed secure oracy skills, so that they can express themselves, communicate with others and convey their thoughts and opinions.
- Overall, the students feel equipped to navigate the wider-world and employment sector, with the English language skills they need
Whole School Reading – takes places in our tutor lesson in the mornings. Students read short stories and full novels with their tutor and complete some reading activities. The work supports the skills needed for the AQA GCSE English language course.
Functional Skills – At Harbour Vale we offer both level 1 and 2 Pearson’s Functional Skills English exams in both reading and writing. This qualification is accepted at most colleges and further education establishments. When passing level 2 exams in both reading and writing, it is equivalent to 1 grade four at GCSE. When passing level 1 in both reading and writing paper, it is equivalent to a grade 3 at GCSE.
