Academy Committees

The Academy Committee (AC) supports the Trustees in providing effective oversight of Harbour Vale Academy. Acting as the Board’s eyes and ears at a local level, the Committee helps ensure that the school continues to provide the highest standards of education, care and support for its students.

While key operational services such as Finance, Human Resources, Estates and IT are managed centrally by the SAST team, the Academy Committee focuses on matters that directly impact students and school life.

The Committee’s responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring educational standards, teaching and learning.
  • Reviewing student welfare and safeguarding arrangements.
  • Providing both challenge and support to the Headteacher and senior leadership team.
  • Representing the views and interests of parents, students, staff and the wider community.

The Academy Committee includes parent and staff representatives, alongside members appointed by the Trustees for their skills, knowledge and experience. The Headteacher serves as an ex officio member.

Academy Committee members are appointed for a four-year term and may be reappointed for further terms.

The Committee meets three times a year, once at the beginning of each full term. An additional meeting is held during the autumn term to review published examination outcomes and student performance data.

Link committee member roles:

Staff Wellbeing – Staff well being is the up most important factor in retaining staff and keeping high staff attendance rates.  It is becoming more of a focus in schools and plays an integral part in the new Ofsted inspection framework.  I would like this governor to support me in providing quality support, CPD and skills in staff mental health and well being.

Teaching & Learning – Jonty Archibald  The member should support the behaviour and attitudes of learning across the school. Monitor, challenge and support subject teachers and SLT in ensuring Teaching and Learning is good or better across the school.

Curriculum – Jonty Archibald Throughout the next year Harbour Vale School will be developing its curriculum to meet student needs and to ensure students are able to successfully access their next education provision.  Whilst ensuring we are meeting the curriculum expectations and the 3 I’s of the inspection framework.

Safeguarding & Attendance – Alison Glazier Safeguarding and attendance are at the heart of everything we do. Every child has the right to an education that is safe and well supported.  Monitoring this to ensure we maximise impact of safeguarding practices.

Attendance across the school has increased over time and we are aiming to ensure all students achieve 85% attendance.

SEND & Vulnerable Groups – Callum Thomas  The majority of students who attend our school have additional needs and may fall into a vulnerable group, we need to ensure we are providing opportunities for them to be successful and that we are taking appropriate measures to cater for their needs.

Finance – Funding streams and school budgets are challenging in the education setting. However with different top up payments and occupancy based budgets we will be striving to create and maintain a balanced budget. Potentially supporting a business plan to improve income and resources for students who attend HVS.
