Personal Development

Personal Development at Harbour Vale

At Harbour Vale we believe in facilitating the holistic development of all our students by ensuring they can make positive choices which will, in turn, provide them with the skills to create a healthy, productive and positive future.

Our personal development curriculum offers unique learning experiences which provide students with enriched cultural capital. By offering a diverse set of experiences, we help to prepare students for the culturally diverse nature of the society in which we live. We deliver a curriculum designed to ensure students are resilient, respectful, and responsible.

Our Personal Development curriculum has the following aims:

  • to develop students to become responsible, respectful and active citizens
  • to develop and deepen students’ understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, and mutual respect and tolerance
  • to promote both diversity and equality of opportunity so that all students can thrive together
  • to ensure an inclusive environment which meets the needs of all students
  • to develop students’ confidence, resilience and knowledge so that they can keep themselves mentally healthy
  • to enable students to recognise online and offline risks to their well-being and to recognise the dangers of inappropriate use of mobile technology and social media
  • to develop students’ understanding of how to keep physically healthy
  • to develop students’ age-appropriate understanding of healthy relationships
  • to support readiness for the next phase of education, training or employment

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) including RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) as well as Citizenship provide the backbone to our Personal Development curriculum.  Careers Education also plays an important role in providing experiences for the personal development of our students. We have an extensive trips and visits programme which supports these aims, and further intervention and enrichment activities such as fitness, variety of sports, child development, hairdressing, cooking, business studies and community activities provide a huge range of opportunities for students to excel at both an individual and community level.
