Oracy Transformation at Harbour Vale: A Culture of Confidence and Conversation
We are proud to share the findings of a recent Voice 21 Oracy Report, which recognises the remarkable progress Harbour Vale has made in developing students’ speaking and listening skills. Since launching our oracy initiative in April 2024, the transformation has been profound—and this report captures the impact across our school community.
A Culture of Confidence and Conversation
Our students now speak with clarity, confidence, and purpose. They make eye contact, project their voices, ask thoughtful questions, and engage in meaningful, constructive dialogue—both in and out of the classroom. This shift has fostered a culture of aspiration and engagement in learning.
Teaching with Purpose
Our teachers lead by example, modelling excellent listening and asking authentic, considered questions. Their relentless commitment to high expectations has helped embed oracy into the fabric of school life, supported by a culture of trust, warmth, and ambition.
Oracy and Therapeutic Thinking
At Harbour Vale, oracy is not a standalone subject—it’s integrated into our therapeutic thinking approach. Staff build strong relationships and use skillful questioning and conversation techniques to nurture students’ confidence and communication skills.
This transformation is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the resilience of our students. Harbour Vale is proud to be a place where every voice matters and every conversation counts.
